Spring Clean Your Mouth!

SPRING CLEAN YOUR MOUTH KITS FREE, The daffodils are starting to bloom and the temperature is tentatively climbing. It can only mean one thing - spring has arrived!

As we brush off the winter cobwebs and begin spring cleaning our homes, we should also start to think about giving our mouths a good spring clean too, advises local dentist, Chris Wood, from Burnley-based Standish Street Dental Practice.

"Maintaining good oral health all year round is essential," says Chris, "but spring is a great time to really give your teeth and gums a deep clean and tackle any underlying problems such as gum disease."

Chris says that although people think gum disease is quite common, it should be treated as early as possible to avoid more complicated problems later on. If left to worsen, gum disease can cause long-term problems including gum recession, sensitivity, very bad breath and even tooth loss.

"Gum disease occurs when bacteria isn''t removed by a proper brushing and flossing routine and infects your gums," says Chris. "In its mildest form, gum disease will start to show itself with bleeding gums when you brush and floss. Your gums will usually be sore and swollen too.

"Studies have shown that gum disease is also linked to other serious conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and premature and low birth weight babies, so it could affect your overall health too," Chris added. "However, with a good brushing and flossing routine at home and regular visits to your dentist and hygienist, early gum disease can be easily sorted.

"If you''re experiencing bleeding when you brush or bad breath, it''s worth booking in a springtime check-up and scale and polish with your dentist. This can help to identify any areas of gum disease, and a springtime scale and polish can lift stains and remove tartar so that you can enjoy a healthier and brighter smile for the spring," he added.

Chris'' springtime oral health tips

  • Haven''t had a scale and polish for a while? Make an appointment to visit your dentist or hygienist and get a good spring clean
  • Remember to brush for two minutes twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. Be sure to brush for the full two minutes!
  • Floss everyday to remove the bacteria that brushing can''t reach
  • Remember to replace your toothbrush every three months. Old and worn-out toothbrushes will harbour bacteria, and frayed bristles won''t remove plaque properly
  • Reduce your intake of sugary and acidic food, such as fizzy drinks, sweets and chocolates. If you must have these, try to have them during a meal and not as snacks throughout the day
